Preparations

Tiling a bathroom may initially seem complex, but it is entirely manageable as a DIY project requiring no advanced skills. Renovating your tiles modernizes your bathroom's appearance and increases your home's value.

Before you begin, we recommend watching a YouTube tutorial on bathroom tile installation to familiarize yourself with the process.

Planning Steps

  • Define your budget and identify materials within your price range
  • Decide which bathroom areas to tile
  • Ensure you have all necessary tools

You can find all the tools you need at retailers such as Hornbach, Jumbo, Coop Brico+Loisirs, or OBI Markt.

Frequently Asked Questions

  • Can new tiles be installed over old ones?
  • The importance of silicone in bathrooms
  • Ceramic vs. porcelain tile differences
  • Natural stone considerations for bathrooms
  • How to tile around fixtures?

Wall Tile Installation

Before starting, ensure walls and floors are clean. Remove dust by brushing or vacuuming, then wipe surfaces with a damp sponge and allow them to dry completely — this step is essential for adhesion.

Installation Steps:

  • Take measurements using a tile and spacer to determine layout
  • Mark a horizontal reference line across the wall width using a thick pencil and level tool
  • Install wooden support strips (battens) along the marked lines
  • Position the first tile against the wall and mark its placement
  • Prepare tile adhesive — ensure the mixture is homogeneous and smooth. Apply adhesive above the support and anchor the first tile by tapping with a mallet
  • Lay tiles using spacers for consistent gaps. Verify the tiles are level with a bubble level
  • For subsequent rows, apply more adhesive directly to the tiles. Regularly tap tiles with the mallet using a tile float
  • Allow the adhesive to cure for 24 hours, then clean edges with a sponge
